Tuxmath helps kids learn arithmetics

By Stephane Carrez

TuxMath is a Linux game that kids can play with and learn arithmetics. It's simple but through its gaming approach it helps kids learn the basis of arithmetics: additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisio

I recently discovered TuxMath after installing my Ubuntu desktop. Our daugther Adelaide is 6 years old and she is learning maths these days. It was a good exercise for her and it worked well: through the gaming approach, she liked the game and played with it while practicing math!!!

The game is simple: a math equation appears at the top of the screen and moves slowly to the bottom. You have to find the result, type it on the keyboard and if the result is good, Tux fires the equation. If you fail to solve the equation before it reaches the bottom, Tux barks at you.

The game is very nice because you can set it with simple calculations (additions with one digit) and ramp up to more advance (divisions or multiplications with two digits). Try it at that level, it's not easy at all (13*17=? in < 5 seconds).
